A storm came up and tried to tip over his tiny craft. He even broke an oar in frustration but was lucky enough to make it out alive. Here Chris stayed for a relatively long time and even went as far as getting a full time job at McDonalds and to open a savings account at a bank. The people at McDonalds had mixed feelings about him but despite being well liked, he quit the job and went to find Jan Burres. When she was getting ready to go to see him, he showed up at her doorstep. While he was staying with Jan, he lived in a trailer near a man named Charlie who was living on the land around it. He helped Jan sell books at a swap market and Jan took a liking and a special protective attitude toward him because her son was in a similar situation. She gave him supplies for the Alaska journey but he returned most of them. Despite the fact that Jen had great concern for Chris, she did not try to stop him because she figured he would be okay. Because he was able to figure out everything else, she assumed that Alaska would be no problem.
